Foresters Open Season at UCSB Diamond
TOP SPORTING EVENTS: JUNE 4-12
Cox Channel 8 is broadcasting a taped replay of last Saturday’s Alumni Big Game, the 10-10 tie between football teams from San Marcos and Santa Barbara Highs. Three more telecasts are scheduled – today (Fri., June 4) at 7:30 p.m., Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m.
Viewing the show, I had a Jim Joyce moment – Joyce being the umpire who missed a call that deprived Detroit pitcher Armando Galarraga of a perfect game. When Santa Barbara’s David Garcia caught a touchdown pass late in the first half, it was Poncho Renteria who threw the pass. Various accounts of the game, including my own, credited Preston Maloney with the throw, but Renteria had replaced Maloney at quarterback before the scoring play.
Other local athletes on the screen this weekend may include the beach volleyball juggernaut of Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers. They are trying to win their third consecutive event on the AVP Tour at Huntington Beach (men’s final at 1 p.m. Sunday on ABC). Since their triumph in the Santa Barbara Open a month ago, Dalhausser and Rogers went on the international tour and claimed victories in the Grand Slam at Rome and the Myslowice Open in Poland.
The Santa Barbara Foresters open their summer baseball season with a weekend series against the San Diego Waves at UCSB. The Foresters will not be at full strength until players involved in the NCAA playoffs report to the club.
The Santa Barbara Breakers will be wrapping up their West Coast Pro Basketball League season this weekend. They will play a semifinal game Saturday night at the SBCC Sports Pavilion, hoping to earn a shot at defending their title on Sunday (1 p.m. at SBCC).
The long and the short of it for runners: The Blue Canyon Trail Race on Saturday will send runners out on a 100-kilometer jaunt from Rancho Oso in the Santa Ynez Valley at 4:30 a.m. On Sunday, the first flight of the Platinum Performance State Street Mile will start at 8 a.m. at the Pedregosa intersection and finish at De La Guerra.
Santa Barbara High golf is the only local team still playing in CIF postseason competition. The Dons finished third in the Southern California Championships and will be swinging in the CIF/SCGA State Championships on Tuesday at the Santa Maria Country Club.
Dos Pueblos High junior Nicholas Scarvelis is the area’s lone athlete in the CIF State Track and Field Championships in Clovis. Scarvelis is seeded sixth in the shot put and 18th in the discus throw.
Some recent highlights:
SBHS graduate Andrew Perez won the Santa Barbara City Golf Championship by a stroke over Levi Garcia. Patrick Duncan Jr., Kevin Marsh and Andrew Geiberger tied for third, two shots back.
Santa Barbara’s boys tennis team was runner-up in CIF Division 1. Top-seeded University of Irvine overpowered the Dons, whose top player was out with illness, by a 17-1 score.
SBCC freshman distance runner Stephen Scrafford was voted Western State Conference Male Track Athlete of the Year after winning WSC titles in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters. He also won the Southern Cal title in the 5,000 and finished second in the State Meet.
Westmont senior Brent Lagace took third place in the men’s javelin and earn All-American status at the NAIA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Marion, Indiana.
Five UCSB athletes have advanced to the NCAA Championships (June 9-12 in Eugene, Ore.): Jane Doolittle in the women’s high jump, Danielle Domenichelli in the women’s 10,000, Julian deRubira in the men’s steeplechase, Ryan Martin in the 800, and Kayla Smith in the women’s shot put.
Senior catcher Marty Mullins went 6-for-11 with three home runs in UCSB’s season-ending baseball series and was named the Big West’s Player of the Week and also one of Collegiate Baseball’s Players of the Week. After sweeping the three-game series at Pacific, the Gauchos finished the season 24-30 and 10-14 in the Big West.

SEMANA NAUTICA
June 29-July 12 – Semana Nautica (“marine week”) began in the 1930s when Santa Barbara residents organized sporting activities with visiting Navy seamen. It evolved into an annual sports festival open to the public around the July 4 holiday. There is no charge for spectators at any event, but the festival’s primary objective is to encourage participation. Events in the 73rd Semana Nautica include age-group swimming, ocean swims, a 15-kilometer run, beach volleyball, the Santa Barbara Open tennis tournament and a tug-of-war.
