Gyrotonic Santa Barbara is a new movement studio featuring the Gyrotonic Expansion System. The Gyrotonic Expansion System is the brainchild of former dancer and creator, Juliu Horvath.

Originally created for dancers, Gyrotonic has been adapted to meet everyone where they are on their personal wellness journey. Using sophisticated machines centered around a weight and pulley system, the equipment supports your body as you literally reach into the limits of your movement potential. Focusing on opening and strengthening the joints as well as creating long, sleek muscles, the Gyrotonic Expansion System can be tailored to every individual no matter your physical goals.

The spectrum of people who have seen results from this method is huge. From stroke victims to Parkinson’s patients to professional dancers and elite athletes, this method frees the body creating efficient, functional strength. Not to mention anyone suffering from joint pain, spine compression, or overall weakness; it can be tailored for anyone.

A typical session starts with basic spinal motions on a stool and then moves onto the equipment. The workout starts at the center of the body, the abdomen and spine, and then progessively moves into the limbs so every body part receives attention. Taking a holistic approach to injury, Gyrotonic heals the entire body so balance and symmetry become the goal. This is achieved by moving the body in circling and spiraling pathways, linking breath and rhythm, along with a constant undulation of the body. Through these principles the body becomes free, open, and healthy.

While Gyrotonic has been around since the late ’70s, it remained at an underground level for years as mostly dancers in New York were the only people being exposed to it. Recently, it has received attention on “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” as Naomi Campbell mentioned it as her preferred method. It is also showing up on different daytime talk shows including, “The Rachel Ray Show,” and “Live With Regis and Kelly.” It has also been written about in certain publications including, “Glamour,” “Elle,” and “Cosmopolitan.”

Gyrotonic Santa Barbara officially opened on May 1, 2010. Owner and teacher, Jill Denison, was introduced to Gyrotonic ten years ago while she was a dancer in New York City. After grappling with frustrating injuries and blockages, she tried Gyrotonic and found the most efficient strength she had ever felt. She was hooked. She began learning about this system as a client over ten years ago and eventually completed the teacher training. Jill is trained on all the equipment, (there are five pieces), Gyrokinesis, therapeutic applications and advanced level work. Jill trains with Juliu Horvath at least once a year and is recognized for her expertise and experience while bringing joy and elegance to the work.
