This is in reference to Kathleen O’Connor’s letter titled SBCC Has First Class Board. I am happy for her that everything at the Main Campus of SBCC is running so smoothly. Too bad the step-children (Continuing Education/Adult Education) don’t share the same fate or affection for the Board of Directors and President Serban.

I was at the meeting where Dr. Serban and the Board solicited input from the Continuing Ed students and community for ideas. The whole meeting was devoted to brainstorming on how to help Continuing Ed, when in reality it was a ruse to quiet the attendees and continue on with their already planned agenda. Thus, all ideas were dismissed, as though this meeting never took place. Just dismissed!! Because of this, the Associated Continuing Education Students (ACES) was born. It took the formation of this group for SBCC to “sorta” recognize us – even though some of the Board Members still don’t acknowledge us. I truly believe that without this organization, our classes would have been cancelled.

ACES invited the Board to come to our June 22 meeting to speak. Joe Dobbs and Sally Green attended. Dobbs read his prepared speech that really didn’t pertain to Continuing Education and seemed surprised we had questions that he either couldn’t or refused to answer. I think it’s time for the community to have representation, not just more of the same. I am voting to oust all incumbents and elect a new fresh group that represents us, the tax-paying, voting citizens. After all, isn’t that what Continuing Education represents? I urge each of you to do the same!
