The devastating Deepwater Horizon oil disaster has killed thousands of birds, hundreds of endangered and threatened sea turtles, and many marine mammals. That however, was evidently not enough of a wake-up call for the Senate, which continues pre-electoral grandstanding instead of taking immediate action to pass the Clean Energy Jobs and Oil Accountability Act (S. 3663).

With this second explosion in the Gulf of Mexico tolling the tocsin for marine life and all the human communities surviving on it in that region, it is to be hoped, although far from guaranteed, that when our senators return to Washington DC, they will finally sit down to do their jobs.

We know that both California senators have promised to do so. Let’s hold them to it.

Our president said that his job wasn’t to get re-elected, but to do the job he was elected to do. When are the hundred senators going to heed that message? Is a return ticket to the gravy train more valuable to them than their souls?
