Cellist Ani Aznavoorian and pianist Egle Januleviciute play Song Tree at Live Oak Unitarian Universalist’s Sunday classical series at 3 p.m. on September 26. The Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra welcomes pianist Adam Neiman to the Lobero on Tuesday, October 5 at 7:30 p.m. for the Concerto No. 1 in E Minor, Op. 11 of Frédéric Chopin. UCSB’s Karl Geiringer Hall will be the site for Stories from My Favorite Planet, a composition by Russell Steinberg that incorporates the writing of slain journalist Daniel Pearl. That concert, which is part of Daniel Pearl World Music Days, takes place at 8 p.m. on Monday, October 11. Camerata Pacifica brings pianist Anna Polonsky to the Music Academy’s Hahn Hall on Friday, October 15 for duets with Adrian Spence, flute, and Ani Aznavoorian, cello, with performances at 1 and 7:30 p.m.
The Santa Barbara Symphony starts its season with Beethoven’s 9th Symphony on Saturday, October 16 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, October 17 at 3 p.m. The Granada stage will be packed for this concert, as the symphony has enlisted the Santa Barbara Choral Society, the Westmont College Choir, and Quire of Voyces along with a cast of distinguished vocal soloists to render the masterwork of the world’s most celebrated composer.
CAMA’s Masterseries welcomes guitarist John Williams to the Lobero on Tuesday, October 19. Music critic and author Alex Ross comes to Campbell Hall on Wednesday, October 20, thanks to UCSB’s Arts & Lectures. Ross reviews classical music at The New Yorker.
A concert by the Staatskapelle Dresden with maestro Daniel Harding and pianist Rudolf Buchbinder inaugurates this year’s CAMA International series at the Granada on Tuesday, October 26. On Thursday, October 28, UCSB opens up its mysterious multimedia project the AlloSphere to the public for Team Play: Multipart Audiovisual Installations. Pianist Christopher Riley performs an all-Schumann recital as part of the CAMA Masterseries at the Lobero on Thursday, November 11. On Friday, November 12, Camerata Pacifica presents the oboist Nicholas Daniel along with pianist Adam Neiman and the group’s principal string players—Catherine Leonard, Ani Aznavoorian, and Richard Yongjae O’Neill—in Hahn Hall concerts at 1 and 7:30 p.m.
The next night, Saturday, November 13, the Santa Barbara Symphony returns to the Granada with a performance of Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade. The concert, which is at 8 p.m., will also be performed at 3 p.m. on Sunday afternoon, November 14.
The UCSB Chamber Choir will perform an evening of Americana under the leadership of Michel Marc Gervais on Friday, November 19, at St. Anthony’s Seminary Chapel. The UCSB Middle East Ensemble will be at Lotte Lehmann Concert Hall the next night, Saturday November 20, at 8 p.m. On Sunday, November 21, Opera Santa Barbara presents soprano Patricia Racette at the Granada. The performance, which begins at 5 p.m., is a Gala Concert featuring a full orchestra. Tuesday, November 23, brings the Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra to the Lobero at 7:30 p.m. for an evening that’s all Mozart, with guest soloist Jose Franch-Ballester on clarinet.
