The movie Sideways may have put Lompoc on the map for its vineyards, but long before the valley became a part of the wine scene, it was famous for its flowers. Thanks to Burpee Seeds, the Valley of Flowers, as it was known, grew a huge portion of the flower seeds for the company, the largest seed catalog mail-order house in the world by 1959. Although flower fields no longer dominate the Lompoc hillsides, its floral history hasn’t been forgotten. In fact, the Lompoc Museum is raffling a handmade, Victorian-era style quilt using colors and design inspired by the 1909 Burpee Seed catalog cover. All proceeds benefit the museum. Tickets are $1 each. The drawing takes place Monday, April 18, 2011. Tickets are on sale through Saturday, April 16. For more info, call 736-3888 or email lompocmuseum@verizon.net.
