Meet four of the winners of Book Scholarships at a luncheon at SBCC in their honor on February 10, 2011. The Friends of the Luria Library, a support group of the library, awarded twenty full-time students and two part-time students a total of $10,500 toward textbooks for their classes. The application process required a paragraph explaining how and why they like the Luria Library, as well as demonstrated financial need.
The applicant’s essays tell the story:
“I would like to say ‘thank you; to the Luria family who donated this library to SBCC, which benefits so many students. It is one of my dreams to donate a library, just like the Luria family, when I become an engineer and architect.” Lin Zhu, engineering major
“My father is ill and my mother works two jobs to support our family. I have a loan, but need another method of unburdening my parents and myself, in order to complete my studies.” Sarah Tajima, linguistics major
“I would not have a 3.59 GPA and be a member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society if it wasn’t for the Luria Library.” Justus Bejno, athletic training major
“I haven’t been able to buy books for the last few semesters; I check them out in the library. This next semester I need to be able to buy the textbooks for my upper division courses.” Dan Nelson, journalism major
