License for Disaster
In 1975, before Diablo Canyon went on-line, my husband and I attended a two-day symposium in the Cal Poly gym. Well-known and informed speakers gave the pros and cons of the plant. We heard every word and joined the hundreds to thousands who marched publicly to protest. Later I joined the Mothers for Peace who became the major watchdog and public informant of its dangers. They now lead the fight against relicensing. The present license expires in 13 years, 2024. Why does it take 13 years to relicense? To pay off everyone who may be dubious?
After the horrible disaster in Japan, countries worldwide are reconsidering their own plants. Were not disasters like Chernoble and our Three Mile Island sufficient warning? Diablo, sitting on at least two or more earthquake faults and close to the ocean, is a disaster waiting to happen.
A major concern was, and still is, that nuclear waste takes hundreds of thousands of years to become non-lethal. In 1973 PG & E said the waste was not a problem, the federal government would take the waste away. It was a lie. I am enraged by the fact that our tax dollars have been and are being used to subsidize Diablo. The costs are beyond what PG & E could and can afford. My taxes go to Diablo? Shut it down NOW!
