Santa Barbara Foundation’s Katherine Harvey Fellows Announce Launch of $300,000 Campaign to Benefit Local Students
The 2010-11 class of Katherine Harvey Fellows is working to raise $300,000 to distribute as one-time grants to local agencies serving K-12 children and youth. Through their grant-making the Fellows seek to promote, support and empower students in critical transition years, and/or engage parent/caregiver participation in their child’s education.
“The last year and a half as a Fellow has opened my eyes to the needs in our community, and has inspired me to lead my class in raising funds, so that we can make truly impactful gifts to agencies that are supporting children in our community through transition years. Through the funds raised, our goal is to increase, both in confidence and competence, student growth and educational success,” said Austin Herlihy, Fundraising Committee Chair.
The Katherine Harvey Fellowship (KHF) is a signature program of the Santa Barbara Foundation and is dedicated to perpetuating philanthropy throughout Santa Barbara County and to promoting community leadership. Fellows participate in an eighteen-month process to learn about various aspects of the non-profit sector, and the role and programs of the Foundation.
The Fellows efforts culminate in June when the Santa Barbara Foundation awards the group a grant to distribute to carefully researched non-profit agencies based on criteria established during the program.
2010-2011 Class of Katherine Harvey Fellows
The 2010-11 class of Fellows is the seventh group to participate. The Fellows are a cadre of talented and motivated future community leaders who are deepening their knowledge about and commitment to community leadership, service, and philanthropy.
The Fellows include: Dianne Gayoski Duva, Fahim Farag, Maria Garcia-Cacique, Austin Herlihy, Victoria Juarez, Patricia Madrigal, Sabina Netto, Charles Osiris, Kaye Palomarez, Christopher Pizzinat, Susan Salcido, Julie Sorenson, Judy Taggart, Jaime Valdez, and Daniel Zia.
About the Katherine Harvey Fellows Program
The Katherine Harvey Fellows program was established in 1999 by the Santa Barbara Foundation to honor the late philanthropist, Katherine Harvey, who became a member of the Foundation in 1940 and was one of the Foundation’s first female trustees.
The Katherine Harvey Fellows Program is an 18-month leadership development program that is designed to serve our community and area nonprofit agencies by incubating a leadership cadre through identifying, selecting, and educating talented and motivated future community leaders about philanthropy, foundations, and nonprofit organizations.
Since 2000, the Katherine Harvey Fellows have raised over $350,000, including matching funds from the Santa Barbara Foundation, and have funded agencies and projects such as:
Youth Making Change
Community Economic Relief Fund
People’s Self Help Housing
Isla Vista Youth Projects
Eight projects in elementary schools throughout Santa Barbara County
