Bobby Martinez Upsets Kelly Slater at the Billabong Rio Pro

Bobby Martinez of Santa Barbara, California, USA (pictured) caused the day’s biggest upset defeating ten times ASP World Champion Kelly Slater (USA) during round three of the Billabong Rio Pro in Barra Da Tijuca on Thursday May 19, 2011.

Martinez advanced into round four where he placed third and will now surf for a spot in the quarterfinals during round five.

The Billabong Rio Pro is event Stop No. 3 of 11 on the men’s ASP World Title Tour featuring the World’s Top 33 surfers plus one wildcard. Running in conjunction with the Billabong Rio Pro is stop No. 5 of 7 on the ASP Women’s World Tour featuring the ASP Top 17 women.

The men’s Billabong Rio Pro holds a waiting period from May 11 through 22 while women’s from May 12 – 16 and is webcast LIVE via http://www.billabongpro.com
