Santa Barbara Boats in Transpac Race
S.B. Yacht Club Members Entering Biennial Sprint Across Pacific
On the Fourth of July, two boats that call the Santa Barbara Yacht Club home will set sail from Long Beach Harbor as competitors in one of the most prestigious and longest-running boat races in the world. The Transpacific Yacht Race, which was first held in 1906 to jump-start the tourism industry in Hawai‘i, sees competitors sail from the shores of California to the tropical paradise that is the U.S.’s 50th state. It is held biennially in odd-numbered years and alternates with the Newport-to-Bermuda race that also began in 1906. This year’s racing, which will mark the 46th Transpac, will see two Santa Barbara boats—Prevail, helmed by Bill Guilfoyle, and Bebe, skippered by Charles Browning—among the international field of competitors.
