With thousands of spectators lining the beach, Montecito’s Lakey Peterson placed second overall in the women’s division of last week’s U.S. Open of Surfing held in Huntington Beach. The 16-year-old regular foot with a flair for above-the-lip surfing defeated current reigning Women’s World Champion and the contest’s number one seed Carissa Moore en route to her impressive runner-up finish on Sunday afternoon. While Peterson was bested by Australia’s Sally Fitzgibbons in the finals, she proved to have no equal the day before in the event’s Women’s Junior Pro category, where she earned top honors.
