I recently began to wonder about the possibility of a more pedestrian friendly State Street. Has there ever been a inquiry into paving the street for a walking and biking promenade that is closed to motor vehicles?

I noticed how well suited our beloved downtown might be for such a change after spending this past summer in different European cities with large car-free zones. Enhanced space for walking, sitting areas, outdoor cafés, public performances, and bustling shoppers could make the area more enjoyable and safer. Does anyone know if the city has considered this type of remodel in the past?
