In his editorial, the Angry Poodle alludes to a quote, which I remember as coming from Joseph Goebbels or some other prominent Nazi [Hans Joust], to the effect that “… when I hear the word Culture, I reach for my revolver.”

Be that as it may, I think the Angry Poodle is misguided when it makes fun of people who want more police protection. As an older person (68), I have been horrified at the newly arrived young “homeless” people who have taken over State Street in recent years. In contrast to the editorial, I recently visited Oxnard, and saw none of this type of person there. On the other hand, I have not see any police foot patrols in recent years in downtown Santa Barbara.

Before criticizing an unsworn program in downtown Santa Barbara, the Independent should do its homework. I was recently disoriented and abandoned by an Elderhostel tour in downtown Sacramento but was assisted by a group of young men who were “city hosts” and wore special clothing. They helped me get back to the motel and certainly increased my positive impression of Sacramento in contrast to Santa Barbara, my home for 33 years.
