The Santa Barbara County Office of Emergency Management is monitoring the local impact of a 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck Guerrero, Mexico at 11:03 a.m. Pacific Standard Time.
“A strong earthquake has occurred,” reports the U.S. Geological Survey, “but a tsunami IS NOT expected along the California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, or Alaska coast. NO tsunami warning, watch or advisory is in effect for these areas.”
The quake, which took place 11 miles underground and approximately 50 miles inland, shook the central and southern areas of Mexico and sent tall buildings swaying in Mexico City. A 5.1 magnitude aftershock rumbled shortly after the initial earthquake.
The Associated Press reports no major damage or injuries.
