Steve Pappas outpaced 3rd District County Supervisor Doreen Farr in fundraising over the last reporting period, though the majority of his contributions came from one source, while Farr showed a balance of contributions from nearly 40 people.
Farr brought in $21,285 over the last two-and-a-half-months. She spent $37,470 toward the June 5 election, and has $94,931 left in the bank, though is saddled with $183,637 in outstanding debt — all legal fees from defending against Pappas’s failed attempt to throw out thousands of Isla Vista votes from the 2008 election, which he lost to Farr. Pappas also lost a race for the seat in 2004.
Farr — who had 39 contributions over $100 — received $2,000 from the Democratic Women of Santa Barbara County, $1,000 from the Santa Barbara Women’s Political Committee, and $5,000 from Quiksilver Trading Inc. hedge fund manager Richard Whited.
The most recent reporting period was from the beginning of the year to March 17.
Pappas received $30,000 from rancher and Santa Ynez Valley Journal owner Nancy Crawford-Hall and $4,500 from Mark Herthel and the Doug Herthel-owned Alamo Pintado Equine Clinic. Pappas also received $500 from Kathy Clearly, the president of P.O.L.O. (Preservation of Los Olivos).
In the 4th District race — expected to be tightly contested — incumbent Joni Gray brought in $18,791. She has $39,565 in cash on-hand, and $35,925 in outstanding debts. Harold Simmons gave her $1,000, while she received $3,000 from the Santa Ynez Band of Mission Indians and $250 from Goleta City Councilmember Roger Aceves.
Peter Adam brought in $29,850 and has $23,044 in cash on-hand. His contributors include several North County ranchers and farmers. Joyce Howerton, who just recently announced her candidacy, received $100 in contributions, and a $2,000 loan.
First District Supervisor Salud Carbajal, while facing opposition, should have no problem getting re-elected. He brought in $68,880 and spent $58,565. He has $304,100 left in his bank. Carbajal received 73 individual contributions, including $5,000 from actor Rob Lowe and $15,000 from the Santa Barbara County Firefighter’s union.
