The waiting period has officially begun for one of Southern California’s most prestigious and beloved surf contests and, though contestant registration is now closed for 2013’s edition of the Rincon Classic, The Santa Barbara Independent has you covered for your last and best chance to compete at the Queen of the Coast. That’s right, the contest may be full with a waiting list of alternates already signed up for virtually every age division, but The Indy is giving away guaranteed competitor slots to two lucky waveriders, complete with entrance fees, a competitor prize package (courtesy of Surf Happens), and all the other great stuff that comes with surfing in the Classic.

Specifically, we are offering one spot in the always popular Gremlins Division (ages 11 and under) as well as the Mens Open Division (ages 18 and up), which is often the Classic’s most hotly contested and popular age bracket. All you have to do to enter is email us at Surf@independent.com and tell us in 200 words or less what Rincon means to you. Be creative, be crass, be honest, and have fun with it. The more original and passionate your answer, the better shot you have sat winning. Also note that, as per the rules of Classic itself, contestants must call either Santa Barbara, Goleta, Montecito, or Carpinteria home. Winners will be announced next Friday, January 11.

As for the Classic, according to contest director Chris Keet, the event is not running this weekend due to subpar conditions. As he put it with a laugh on Thursday, “We call it the Rincon Classic not the Rincon Average. We have seven more waiting weekends to get it right, so we are in no hurry. The Queen will call.”
