What should California do about fracking, the controversial technique officially known as hydraulic fracturing that uses water, chemicals, and pressure to crack underground formations in order to better extract oil? That’s the question being asked of Santa Barbarans at large this Friday, April 19, from noon-8 p.m., at the University Club (1332 Santa Barbara St.), where the state Department of Conservation/Division of Oil, Gas, and Geothermal Resources is hosting an informative forum as part of its process to make new regulations for the practice. The agenda revolves around a “discussion draft” of possible new rules, including well testing before fracking, disclosure of materials used, and what to do once a site is done, that was released in December as a starting point for the process.
