Young Can Sink
Riffing on comments that our “homeless students” choose to not to get jobs to afford apartments.
Here our “homeless” have far-off homes
From which they regularly roam
To attend the school of their choice
And find knowledge to fuel their voice.
Here “student” means one who studies
For credits or because they please,
On record or incognito —
Students are where students go.
A homeless student has no home
And does much more than lurk and roam
Around campus looking the part —
A name brand kid with golden heart.
A homeless student had a plan
Better than living in a van
But lost a puzzle piece somehow
And doesn’t want to give up now.
Both sail the same dark stormy seas,
But some sail on boats of Swiss cheese
And those who choose a boat with holes
Should plan on sinking their own goals.
