McConnell's Evi Ein and Michael Palmer
Paul Wellman

Some believe Labor Day means the sad end of summer – close the pool, put the white pants away, start thinking of soups and hot chocolate. McConnell’s has a different idea in mind, however, as it’s celebrating the official grand opening of its State Street (728 State St., 963-8813, mcconnells.com) shop on Wednesday, September 4th, from 7:00 p.m. to close, with special deals like half off all ice cream scoops and ice cream sammies, plus giveaways of merchandise and apparel and all the usual grand opening hoopla.

If you haven’t been since their soft opening a few weeks ago (if a hard ice cream place can have such a thing), here’s your chance to check out the spot owner Michael Palmer has said is a “way to give some wings to this seventy year old story” that is McConnell’s. The building is outfitted sort of industrial-retro in the basic color scheme – red, white, black – of the recent pint container rebranding and home to more flavors than you can see in stores. Add in goods baked on site, high quality sauces to match the ice cream’s standards, and you end up with delights like the Tortuga Sundae, a turtle by another name, but with even more caramel, chocolate, ice cream deliciousness.
