The S.B. Questionnaire: Tim Aceves
Getting Creative with UGG's Social Media Guru
When I heard Tim Aceves describe himself as a nerd, it made me laugh out loud. That’s because he exudes both confidence and style, wearing work boots while sipping Oban single malt scotch neat at the bar near his Goleta office.
Tim does have verified nerd-cred, though, thanks to making a name for himself as social media associate for UGG Australia, where he’s helped expand the Goleta-based Deckers’ brand into international markets. Among other tactics, he helped form “the Creative Council,” which showcases a cabal of “key digital influencers.” He’s also the son of Roger Aceves, the current Mayor of Goleta who is planning a run for 2nd District County Supervisor next year as well.
Tim took time out of his busy and “connected” life to answer the Proust Questionnaire.
What do you like about your job the most?
Connecting with people. Social media is about authenticity and, when you are able to connect people to things they love, it can be an incredible experience.
What is your most marked characteristic?
Hmm, well, I am a huge nerd. I’m an aficionado of all things geek culture.
Who makes you laugh the most?
My friends, even though we are all in different cities. It’s amazing how entertaining we can be even over email.
What do you consider your greatest achievement?
Helping my father win his first election in 2006. I was lucky at the time to have flexibility in my schedule to be able to walk precincts with him — and each one we walked, he won.
What is your idea of perfect happiness?
A great sandal tan. Late night moments around a fire with those closest to you.
What is your greatest fear?
That the dream where you’re the only one wearing underwear isn’t a dream, but reality. And sharks.
Who do you most admire?
My father, for his determination and his drive. Nothing has ever slowed him from accomplishing his dreams.
What is your greatest extravagance?
Shoes, hands down. I can’t help myself. I really could use another closet.
What is your current state of mind?
Tired, yet wide-awake and dreamy.
What is the quality you most like in people?
Compassion. The ability to be able to walk in other people’s shoes, however cliche it may seem, is truly invaluable.
What is the quality you most dislike in people?
Inability to listen. So many people hear you, but so few actually listen — unless it’s a text notification.
What do you most value in friends?
Loyalty. My friends are always there even if they’re time-zones away.
Which words or phrases do you most overuse?
“Don’t worry about it.”
Which talent would you most like to have?
I wish I could sing. I know, it’s a common one, but if you understood the pain my poor shower has to endure each morning, you’d understand.
If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
I’d be more graceful. I’m one of the clumsiest people I know. Carpet is even dangerous.
Where would you most like to live?
Ancient Egypt. I’d get to the bottom of how they really built the pyramids in no time.
What is your most treasured possession?
My great-grandfather’s pocket-knife. I spent many days on that old porch, listening to Vin Scully as he carved up apples for us to snack on.
What is your motto?
Life is always better with a good glass of bourbon and cowboy boots.
