A 52-year-old man was shot Monday night by one or more law enforcement officers during a confrontation in the area of Patterson Avenue and Agana Drive in Goleta. He is being treated for non- life threatening injuries, said Lt. Kelly Moore of the Sheriff’s Office in a prepared statement, and no deputies or officers were injured in the incident. Authorities have so far released very few details on the shooting.

According to Moore, the California Highway Patrol issued a “be on the lookout” alert shortly before 8 p.m. for a wrong-way driver in the area of Patterson Avenue and Calle Real. The vehicle, a red, full-size pick-up truck, was reportedly traveling northbound in a southbound Patterson lane. A Sheriff’s Deputy and a Highway Patrol Officer spotted the truck and “attempted to stop the vehicle,” said Moore. “During the attempt to stop the vehicle, several shots were fired at the vehicle.” The man, whose identity has not been released, was transported to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital.

“Due to the early stages of this investigation, no further information is being released at this time,” said Moore.

[UPDATE, 3:00 p.m.]: The suspect has been publicly identified as Weldon Fewell, a San Diego resident. He has been arrested for assault with a deadly weapon (a vehicle) on a peace officer, said Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Sgt. Mark Williams. He is in custody and in stable condition at Cottage Hopsital, Williams explained.
