Gaviota Rest Stops to Open, Then Close

The popular rest stops off both sides of Highway 101 at the Gaviota Pass have been closed for nearly a month, as Caltrans crews worked to fix “water issues,” according to spokesperson Jim Shivers, who explained that maintenance crews had both repaired and replaced the affected water lines. “It should be open by this weekend,” said Shivers on Tuesday.

But he also reminded that the rest stops are set for another series of shut downs this spring due to a “major construction job” that includes extensive plumbing remodel of two restrooms and the development of a new crew building as well as miscellaneous electrical work, carpentry, tile, irrigation, and landscaping work. It’s unclear as to whether both rest stops will be closed during the duration of that work, or if they will stagger the closures.

On top of that, that stretch of 101 is due for a significant “curve realignment” project as the roadway turns inland near Gaviota State Beach, but that’s still a year or so off.
