Century-Old Canary Island Pine Axed

A 115-year-old Canary Island pine tree at the entrance to the Braille Institute was cut down Tuesday. The center, located on the 2000 block of De la Vina Street, determined the deteriorating tree could not recover from burrowing turpentine beetles after working with well-recognized area arborists for years, according to a press release. “Unfortunately, like many of the other Canary Island pine trees in the city, and despite best efforts to maintain and support the tree to thrive, we have determined that the tree has reached the end of its life,” said the institute’s Executive Director Michael Lazarovits. A Torrey pine will be planted in its place.
