Santa Barbara wine country pioneer Daniel J. Gainey died at the age of 89 on December 29, about 30 years after planting his first grapevines at what would become known as The Gainey Vineyard. In 1962, he purchased the Santa Ynez Valley ranch along today’s Highway 246 near the airport, where he raised hay, other crops, and horses before planting his vineyard. Gainey leaves behind 11 grandkids and seven children, including his son, Dan Jr., who joined the family business in 1985.
