Santa Barbara City College’s softball team will not compete in the 2015 season because not enough players signed up, the college announced Friday.

“The decision was reached after the determination there were not the necessary 12 to 15 players on the roster to handle the rigors of a 40-game season,” SBCC said in a prepared statement, which also explained that 12 team members graduated last spring.

Training and practice for the Vaqueros will continue in the meantime, and the college said the team plans to compete again in 2016. The team had a winning 2014 season with a 22-16 record and placed second in the WSC Gold Division.

In December 2012, SBCC announced that it would be suspending its men’s tennis program after the head coach left and because of a declining local interest. The team has not been reinstated.
