Santa Barbara Central Public Library's renovations include the unheard of, an area where patrons can both read and eat.
Jean Yamamura

Now that the renovated main floor of the Santa Barbara Library is open, you can not only read and borrow books but eat at a corner table, with a view of the courthouse.

Yes, eat. Another rule gets trashed! One section is furnished with tables and chairs on a polished surface, all the better to clean up scraps.

The remodeled main floor is spacious and has new furnishings, a tech center, an adult reading center, and glassed-in space for special events.

There’ll be a grand opening on Sunday, September 13, noon to 4 p.m., along with a grand opening for the new Children’s Library on the lower level.

For that, there’ll be music, refreshments, face-painting, entertainers, and a ribbon-cutting. All free and open to the public.
