[UPDATE] Pedestrian Struck and Killed on Highway 101
Driver Was Police Lieutenant Returning Home From Work
[Update, 3:38 p.m.]: Daniel Ramos, 34, is the pedestrian’s name.
[Original Story] A male pedestrian was struck and killed Tuesday night while walking in a northbound lane of Highway 101 near the Turnpike Road offramp, said CHP spokesperson Officer Jonathan Gutierrez in a press release.
The driver of the 2004 white Ford Focus, which hit the pedestrian, was Santa Barbara police Lieutenant Ed Olsen. Police spokesperson Sgt. Riley Harwood said Olsen, who had just finished his regular 10-hour work shift, was taking his normal route home.
Following the 10:32 p.m. crash, the pedestrian — a Santa Barbara resident — died on-scene from his injuries. Olsen was transported via AMR ambulance to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries.
Gutierrez said the incident remains under investigation. The Sheriff’s-Coroner Office has not released the pedestrian’s name, pending notification of his next-of-kin. Harwood extended the Police Department’s condolences to the man’s family.
