Pedestrian Crossing Sting Nabs 24 Drivers
Goleta Effort Targeted Motorists Who Failed to Yield
Crossing four lanes of traffic on foot can be daunting, and to raise awareness of pedestrians, the Goleta Police Department trotted a plainclothes deputy across the road in three locations, nabbing 24 motorists who failed to stop. The operation on Wednesday afternoon took place at Calle Real and Kingston Avenue on the mountain side of the highway, and along Hollister Avenue at Chapel Street and at Orange Avenue on the ocean side of the 101. All three spots have crosswalks, but no traffic signal.
Deputies focused on drivers who did not yield to the pedestrian (which can be a $175 fine) and those who swerved around stopped vehicles to pass — a violation far more dangerous to someone on foot, with a fine of up to $400.
“Thankfully, the majority of the motorists observed during this operation properly and safely yielded to the pedestrian in the crosswalk,” said Sergeant William Henebry, the Goleta Traffic Unit supervisor.
