Bernie Surpasses Hillary in Santa Barbara

As of late Friday afternoon, Bernie Sanders crept past Hillary Clinton in the vote totals for Santa Barbara County, the 24th Congressional District, and San Luis Obispo County, according to the latest election office update. The new figures — which are not final — show Sanders with 1,293 more votes (50.3 percent to 49 percent) in the congressional district than Clinton, who carried the district by a small margin on election night. The congressional district includes Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, and small part of Ventura counties.

In Santa Barbara County, Sanders had just 108 more votes than Clinton, as of Friday afternoon. The county — which had visits from both Sanders and Clinton in the past two weeks — still has 13,000 vote-by-mail ballots and 7,000 provisional ballots left to count. In San Luis Obispo County, Sanders showed 954 more votes than Clinton (50.3 percent to 48 percent) as of Friday.

In California, Clinton had a sizable lead — 12.4 percent — on Sanders.

As for the GOP, Donald Trump secured 46,621 votes — 74.4 percent of the Republican primary — in the area comprising the 24th Congressional District. John Kasich, the Ohio governor who dropped out of the race in May, won 7,741 votes (12.3 percent). Ted Cruz, a Texas senator who dropped out last month, won 5,433 votes (8.7 percent). Ben Carson, the neurosurgeon who dropped out in March, attained 2,516 votes (4 percent).

In the race for Congress, Democrat Salud Carbajal secured 57,443 votes — nearly 20,000 more than second place finisher Republican Justin Fareed, as of Friday night. Fareed’s lead ahead of Republican Katcho Achadjian — now about 3,000 votes — grew by 500, according to Friday tallies. In fourth place, Democratic Helene Schneider had 25,863 votes. Democrat Bill Ostrander is currently in fifth — with 10,377 votes — just 139 more than Republican Matt Kokkonen.

The election results are not final until July 7.
