A UCSB soccer player was arrested October 4 for assault with a deadly weapon and reckless driving after almost backing over a campus parking officer who was putting a wheel clamp on his car, the Daily Nexus reports.

Sam Strong

According to the Nexus, when second-year student Sam Strong witnessed the officer placing the clamp on one of his car’s rear wheels in Parking Lot 25, he quickly got in his vehicle and attempted to drive away, narrowly missing the officer. Strong was later located on campus and arrested.

Strong had several unpaid parking tickets totaling approximately $600, Sgt. Rob Romero with the UCSB Police Department told the Nexus. Wheel clamps are typically used for cars with five or more citations, he said.

Strong was booked in County Jail then released on bail. He has been suspended from all athletic competition, and the university’s Office of Judicial Affairs will conduct its own investigation.
