Nearly six months after one of the Channel Islands National Park’s most-visited day-trip spots was closed due to a faulty staircase, Anacapa Island opened to visitors last weekend after the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers used a Skycrane helicopter to install a new set of stairs. The staircase was flown from Ventura Harbor to the cliff-lined island, where the original staircase—which the Coast Guard installed in 1932—had eroded to an unsafe condition this past June. The replacement comes just in time for whale watching and wildflower season.
