Mayhem arrived as scheduled in Isla Vista last weekend as
Halloween stretched over three days that featured roadblocks, heavy
drinking, costume ingenuity, and well-deserved overtime pay for
police. An estimated 25,000 revelers descended on the college
outpost for the All Hallows weekend, bringing with them more trick
than treat; criminal conduct was up from last year, authorities
said. The final numbers included more than 270 arrests, some 300
criminal citations, a half-dozen DUI and zero-tolerance
charges-rounded out by a fatal/near-fatal fall from the I.V.
cliffs. Also, more than 100 cars were impounded and hundreds of $35
parking citations were issued.
