Indy Publisher Named Regent
Santa Barbara Independent publisher George Thurlow was elected
last week to serve a two-year term as alumni representative to the
University of California Board of Regents. Thurlow said he
“campaigned” for the post by arguing the UC system should devote
more attention to scholarship fundraising aimed at bringing
financially disadvantaged minority and working-class white students
into the UC system. Thurlow, who begins his term next July, said he
also urged regents to adopt green-friendly building requirements
for new construction projects. Thurlow’s election gave Santa
Barbara two representatives on UC’s politically influential
decision-making body; the other is Judith Hopkinson.
