In the wake of last week’s devastating 6.2 magnitude earthquake
in Indonesia, local über-charity Direct Relief International (DRI)
mobilized to provide the victims with thousands of dollars worth of
medical supplies and thousands more in general aid. Coordinating
with the national chairman of Muhammadiyah – the largest civic
organization in Indonesia – DRI sent out some $100,000 in cash and
five tons of medical supplies to victims on Tuesday afternoon. DRI
officials said that their initial contributions to the recovery
efforts were irrespective of any money they may receive from the
public, but their gifts will increase in the coming weeks according
to donations. As of press time, the death toll from Sunday’s quake
was estimated at 5,500 and rising.
