The Isla Vista Recreation and Parks District board of directors
decided on June 15 not to implement a million-dollar grant for a
soccer field, prompting one frustrated boardmember to resign
immediately in protest. Logan Green was on the board in 2004 when
it passed the resolution to seek the grant, which was awarded in
2005; he was one of only two directors voting this month to pursue
the soccer field, the other being Eric Cummings. Two of his fellow
directors, Brian Brown and Diane Kahn, voted in 2004 to seek the
grant, but this month changed their minds, primarily in response to
fans of Isla Vista’s community gardens. The Estero Park and
Community Center master plan calls for not only a soccer field but
a skateboard park and basketball court, and calls for the gardens’
relocation to a less desirable spot across the street.
