Physics professor David Gross – who shared a Nobel Prize in 2004 and heads UCSB’s Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics – has been elected to the American Philosophical Society. The elite intellectual group, which honors achievements in all fields of inquiry, chose Gross as one of its 52 new members based on his contributions to solving what physicists termed “the last great remaining problem of the ‘Standard Model’ of the quantum mechanical picture of reality.”
