Dos Pueblos Students Win State Economics Contest
Student Team Shows Elite Grasp of Economic Principles
Pitted against eight other high schools, a student team from Dos Pueblos High School won the 2008 Economics Challenge State Finals. The Dos Pueblos team-composed of Angela Dai, Jacob Kovacs-Goodman, Joseph McDaniel, Michael Reveles, highly involved alternate Michael Brand, and their teacher, Roland Lewin-was part of the Adam Smith division of the contest, which included students currently enrolled in Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, honors, college level, or two-semester classes. The academic competition rewarded students’ adroitness with economic concepts, and included rewards of U.S. Savings Bonds and all-expense paid trips to New York City to participate in the National finals.
The other division of the state finals-the David Ricardo division-included students enrolled in general economics or one-semester economics classes, and was won by Mission San Jose High School in Fremont, California. In its eighth year, the contest was sponsored by the California State University, San Bernardino-based California Council on Economic Education (CCEE), a non-profit corporation dedicated to promoting economic and financial literacy curricula in high schools. Jim Charkins, the Executive Director of CCEE and a professor of economics at CSU, San Bernardino, maintained that these students represent the best economic scholars in the state. “With April being both National and California Financial Literacy Month, this engaging and fun contest is a great way to bring awareness to a key issue affecting millions of Americans: lack of understanding of basic economic and financial principles,” he said.
