The University of California announced it will reduce the number of freshmen accepted for fall 2009 by 2,300-an approximately 6-percent reduction overall-in order to cope with budget cuts resulting from the state financial crisis. UCSB, cut by 6.6 percent, will bear a lighter share of the burden than other campuses. Critics of the decision say it will harm campus diversity in a way that an offer to accept more community college transfer students will not counterbalance. (/freshman122)
