Protecting Girls’ Knees

Female athletes have been tearing their ACLs (anterior cruciate ligaments) at an alarming rate. Mark Brisby, a Santa Barbara chiropractor and athletic trainer, wants to do something about it. He is starting up a summer course called GAME (Girls Athletic Movement Enhancement) at his facility, The Training Room (1 N. Calle Cesar Chavez #110).

Brisby says an orthopedic surgeon will assist him in the course, which intends to teach “proper jumping, landing, running and cutting techniques.” He points out that 70% of ACL injuries occur when the knee is wrenched in non-contact situations. Depending on the sport, Brisby says, female athletes are blowing out their ACLs from two to ten times more frequently than males.

The GAME course will consist on 24 sessions beginning June 8. For information, call 805-962-3278.
