Tsunami Advisory in Effect

The tsunami that killed more than 20 people on Samoa is making its way toward the West Coast, and state officials are now warning Santa Barbara County that “wave action of up to 65 centimeters” (25.6 inches) could occur along with strong currents.

The wave, which was triggered by a massive 8.3 earthquake in the South Pacific, is expected to arrive along the coast at 9:03 p.m., and the tsunami advisory will remain in effect until at least an hour past that time.

Boating and swimming is not advised during this period, and the public is encouraged to stay away from the beach.

There are no inland evacuations planned.
