From the opening warbles and gurgles of “The Light That Failed,” we get the sense that we’re about to be taken on a ride. Meandering guitars layer over ethereal vocals, subtle samples, and effects that sound like they were either recorded underwater or inside someone’s lower intestine. Under his Atlas Sound moniker, Deerhunter frontman Bradford Cox moves between lo-fi depressive (“An Orchid”) and surfy popster (“Sheila”) throughout this, his second full-length solo effort. The obvious gem lies in “Walkabout,” Cox’s buoyant and tambourine-filled duet with Animal Collective’s Noah Lennox, but it’s far from all Logos has to offer. The influences here are quiet and wide-ranging, but what shines through first and foremost is Cox’s startling lyrical and vocal immediacy. Played alone in your house or among a group of friends, Logos feels like a peek into Cox’s most intimate musical sessions and leaves its listeners curious, inspired, and downright introspective.
