Festival of Lights Celebration to Educate, Celebrate Five Different World Holiday Traditions
The winter season is commemorated throughout the world in a spectacle of unique ways. If you already have the Santa story memorized, brush up on your world-culture knowledge on Thursday, December 17, at 6:30 p.m. by joining the Tri-Counties Anti-Defamation League and Just Communities at the Faulkner Gallery (40 E. Anapamu St.) for Festival of Lights: Celebrating the December Holidays as One Community (free admission). Part community festivity and part learning experience, attendees will gain a wealth of knowledge about five distinct December holiday traditions from around the world:
• Diwali: A five-day festival of lights celebrated by sects of Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, and followers of Jainism.
• Eid al-Adha: A celebration of the completion of the Hajj, an annual pilgrimage to Mecca by Muslims worldwide.
• Hanukkah: An eight-day festival of lights observed by followers of Judaism throughout the world.
• Kwanzaa: A week-long American holiday honoring African roots and culture.
• Las Posadas: More than a week of festivities observed by many Mexican and Latin American Catholics to commemorate Biblical nativity scripture.
