On Monday, March 8, City of Goleta officials, representatives from Metropolitan Transit District (MTD), and curious citizens met at the new bus shelter in Old Town on the north side of Hollister Avenue. Mayor Eric Onnen dedicated the new bus shelter with enthusiasm and a promise that this is only a small sign of what’s continually being improved in Goleta. The new bus shelter has comfortable seating and protection from inclement weather, complete with solar-powered lights for nighttime travelers.

The mayor went on to say that while the City of Goleta is looking for the funding to improve the city in bigger and better ways, the 100 little things that can be done now will all add up and improve the look of Old Town Goleta. Onnen told the crowd that its important to celebrate small advances, such as the new bus shelter, in order to emphasize to citizens that Goleta improvement projects are a top priority to City officials.

“The bus stop in front of the Carpeteria store in Old Town is one of the more active stops in Goleta, and the second shelter will be of great benefit to the scores of people who visit the Community Center and Boys and Girls Club each day, many of who use transit as their mode of travel,” said Onnen in a press release. “That’s why the City Council and the Redevelopment Agency made these improvements a priority. The new shelters and benches make these stops comfortable and convenient and also enhance the street scape of Old Town.”

Sherrie Fisher, MTD’s general manager, said that as the state takes away more and more funding for public transportation, she is glad to see that the City of Goleta has placed importance on enhancing the public transit experience.
