Candidates for local office are locked in and ready to go for the primary election set for June 8.

Dr. Dan Secord is officially in the contest for the 2nd District election, facing off against incumbent Janet Wolf, who defeated Secord in 2006. As was his focus in that election, Secord said he plans to center on his fiscal knowledge and background given the county’s financial pickle.

Running to replace Bernice James as County Treasurer-Tax Collector is her second-in-command Harry Hagen, who has worked for the county for 14 years. His opponent in that race will be Michael Cheng of Santa Barbara. Former Santa Barbara City Councilmember Brian Barnwell thought of running, but eventually chose not to pull papers for that race.

County Sheriff Bill Brown, Recorder-Assessor Joe Holland, and County Auditor-Controller Bob Geis will all run unopposed, while coworkers Joshua Lynn and Joyce Dudley will square off for District Attorney, in what will be one of the most hotly contested local races.

Rep. Lois Capps will run unopposed in the primary, but several Republicans will face off for a chance to run against Capps in the November general election. Running in the Republican primary is: John Davidson, a Thousand Oaks insurance and financial services expert; David Stockdale, a Santa Maria resident who began his own health and life insurance business; Clark Vandeventer, a Santa Barbara resident who is the former deputy director of the Reagan Ranch Center; and Tom Watson, a Summerland resident who started a Goleta company that manufactures wireless components.

Republicans Mike Stoker and Oxnard resident Daniel Goldberg will face each other in the primary for the right to challenge the winner of the Das Williams versus Susan Jordan Democratic primary in the 35th Assembly District.

Statewide, State Senator Abel Maldonado, who represents much of North County, will be running for lt. governor, while State Senator Tony Strickland will be running for state controller and outgoing Assemblymember Pedro Nava is running for attorney general
