Earth Day organizers claimed they managed to recycle or compost 84 percent of the waste generated during the two-day event in downtown Santa Barbara. They claimed that the crowd of 31,000 honoring the 40th Earth Day produced 2,774 pounds of waste that was composted and 1,840 pounds of trash that was recycled instead of going to the dump.
