John Buttny put in his last official day as executive director of Santa Barbara County’s 10-Year Plan to End Chronic Homelessness on Wednesday, June 30. We could easily lapse into angst and hand-wringing now that he’s officially gone and no replacement is in sight as of this blog post. But what good would that do?

Buttny’s been toiling on the 10-Year Plan since it was a starry-eyed concept paper out of the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness under the Bush administration. That was 2004. It became real very quickly though in counties and cities across the nation as the Housing and Urban Development Department (HUD) wasn’t going to give money to any local government that didn’t have a 10-year plan.
