British journalist Matthew Alford said this week that a private autopsy report that’s been missing for 10 years, but has recently resurfaced, concludes that former screenwriter Gary Devore—a onetime Carpinteria resident—had been murdered. Devore’s body was found in 1998 in his car, which had been submerged in the California aqueduct near Palmdale. At the time, Devore had been missing for more than a year, and the Los Angeles County coroner listed the cause of death as undetermined. Devore’s wife, Wendy Oates Devore, hired three doctors to conduct a private autopsy, but the report, inexplicably, never made it into her hands. Alford claims he recently got a copy while researching a book he was working on about Hollywood. The report, Alford said, revealed that Devore’s hands were missing. Devore, who worked on several action movies, including Raw Deal starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, was on his way home from New Mexico at the time of his disappearance.
