On Thursday, November 25, Organic Soup Kitchen will host its second annual Community Thanksgiving Day Dinner at the Veteran’s Memorial Building from noon to 5pm. Last year, with help of more than 200 dedicated volunteers, the nonprofit organizer fed and cared for more than 1,000 guests, including homeless men, women and children, low-income families and countless other members of this community without the means to celebrate a traditional Thanksgiving. This year, the group anticipates the number of guests to increase by at least 25 percent.

Organic Soup Kitchen — with support from Doctor’s Without Walls, Santa Barbara’s Transition House as well as Farmer’s Market, Whole Foods and Peet’s Coffee—will provide a nourishing Thanksgiving menu consisting of turkey, gravy and mashed potatoes as well as vegetarian options and, of course, organic soup. Guests can also enjoy live music and entertainment and fun activities in the Veteran’s Memorial Building courtyard.

The event provides an opportunity for some of Santa Barbara’s most disadvantaged to eat a wholesome, home-cooked meal in a safe, warm and nurturing environment. It sends a message of hope and encouragement at a time of year when it’s most needed.

Counting more than 4,000 homeless individuals and thousands of struggling families, Organic Soup Kitchen fills a great need in the community, not only through its Thanksgiving Day Dinner, but through its annual Christmas and Easter Day Dinners and by providing wholesome breakfast every Sunday morning to impoverished individuals and families under the historic fig tree on Montecito Street. The nonprofit also offers certification classes toward a career in the culinary arts for the same demographic.
