Each year in the U.S., approximately 4 million to 6 million shelter dogs are put down, according to the Shadow’s Fund Web site. Shadow’s Fund (shadowsfund.org) is a Lompoc-based rescue ranch that tries to mitigate canine overpopulation by offering sanctuary to “older dogs, bully breeds, and dogs suffering from injury.” The end goal is to find appropriate homes for the dogs rescued.

Recently, Carivintâs Winery decided to team up with Shadow’s Fund to help raise awareness and money for the sanctuary. As such, the five-year-old winery has created a holiday package, “Lovers Not Fighters,” a three-pack of wine featuring rescued pit bulls on the label, with proceeds from sales benefiting Shadow’s Fund. To order, visit carivintas.com. The winery (476 First St., Solvang; 693-4331) is also holding a Holiday Reception fundraiser Saturday, December 11, noon-3 p.m. The event includes wine tasting, hors d’oeuvres, and Shadow’s Fund adoptable dogs.
